1963 Studebaker Avanti

Between January 1962 and December 1964 the Studebaker Avanti went from a bold inspiration, to a fast and elegant production automobile, to a premature discontinuation. But what else was happening in American pop culture during that brief interval? Late in 1962 the world teetered on the brink of nuclear war over the Cuban Missle Crisis. On April 10th 1963 the US nuclear submarine Thresher sank 220 miles east of Cape Cod with all hands-129 dead. On August 28th Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a dream" speech on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. In November of 1963 President Kennedy was assasinated in Dallas, Texas. Throughout 1964 the Civil Rights Movement continued and the conflict in Vietnam escalated. Of course, this is only a sampling of subjects from that period.
