Pop Artist Andy Warhol produced
a surprising number of works based on cars including the BMW
M1 "Art Car" shown above and stylish but unfinished
art book "Cars" for Daimler Chrysler. Warhol's
1962 silkscreen of a Studebaker
Avanti is one of his rarest works. The silkscreen on canvas
with synthetic polymer is titled "Avanti Car." Warhol
used a half-tone screened image of the Avanti for his serigraph
prints. A moiré was created when a negative was shot
from the original. Warhol used Hylon Nylon of Switzerland for
his serigraphs. Most serigraphs are made with the postive transparent
image; this one was made with the negative image in contact
with the photo emulsion put on the nylon screen. He did a series
of cars in crashes portraying them as weapons of violence. He
also did images of electric chairs using the same photo emulsion
serigraph technique. |
