| Roughly translated from the Italian,
Avanti means "forward." The Avanti could not be more
appropriately named. A 1963 Levis Strauss
ad called the car, " an aerodynamic wedge designed
to defy the wind." At the forward end of the long hood,
there is no grille. Air is ducted to the radiator through a
scoop hidden below the slender, blade-like bumper. The hood
is a simple, angular shape with virtually no embellishments
other than single headlights set slightly inboard and a tapering
asymmetric bulge that expands back to form a cowling over the
interior instrument cluster. Fenders are severely indented at
the body's mid-section. From belt line to rocker, the panels
are curved inward, forming what is called a "coke
bottle curve." The subtle and evocative sculpturing
of the "coke bottle curve"
gives that wedge a swoopy, almost organic thrust like a wildcat
about to leap. The side window glass is curved. The roof and
tail are tapered to meet in a bobbed fast-back and the quarter
panels merge into the deck with a dramatically swooping curve. The
upswept rear combined with the forward rake make the Avanti
look like that wildcat is poised to pounce. |
