Studebaker – Overview

1963 Studebakers
Studebaker began as the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company. The company endured for 114 years spanning more than a century of technological progress. Their Conestoga covered wagons crossed the frontier. By the 1920's Studebaker was the largest manufacturer of wheeled vehicles in the world. The 1927 Erskine was a highlight of that era. Raymond Loewy's post World War II bullet nose designs made Studebaker highly visible and established a policy of innovative design. New company president Sherwood Egbert called in Loewy to design a sports car in 1961. By 1962 Studebaker had produced one of the most unique vehicles of the 20th century: the Avanti.
