An Avanti was filmed on a street in San
Francisco for the fourth Star Trek movie, The Voyage Home
(1986). The 1973 Avanti II owned by De
Forest Kelly, who played Dr. McCoy, was filmed on location
but these scenes were apparently cut from the final theatrical
release. Star Trek IV brings Kirk,
Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov from the 23rd
century to present-day San Francisco. In their own time, the
Starfleet crew encounter an alien probe emitting a mysterious
messagea message delivered in the song of the now-extinct
Earth species of humpback whales. Failure to respond to the
probe will result in Earth's destruction, so Kirk uses time-travel
to transport a captured Klingon starship to 20th-century Earth.
The crew manages to transport a humpback whale to the future
in an effort to peacefully communicate with the alien probe.
Leonard Nimoy directed. The "Star Trek" Avanti is
undergoing a customized restoration by Matthew Chess. Its
amazing transformation is documented here: Dr.
McCoy's Avanti. Matthews's "project" would look
perfect in a future Star Trek movie!
