Straman Convertible
The Avanti convertible prototypes were produced for Stephen Blake in 1984. Only three 1985 production convertibles were built. One car was white with a white top, one was red with a tan top, and the third was black with a tan top. In order for the top mechanism to fold into its well, the gas tank had to be altered. Steve Blake filed for bankruptcy in 1985. Michael Kelly re-established production of both convertibles and coupes in 1987. John J. Cafaro continued making convertibles. Cafaro and his red convertibles appeared on "Wheel of Fortune" in 1989 and an article appeared in Newsweek Magazine titled "Buffing Up An Old Classic."
Convertible Prototype Filmed

The first prototype was made by Richard Straman in California from a 1982 coupe (serial number RQB3370 shown at top of page). This car was filmed by director John G. Avildsen for the 1984 film, The Karate Kid. Shown at left are Ralph Macchio as Daniel and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita as Miyagi in a scene from the film. A second prototype was made by Mark Doyne at Emess Coachbuilders in Florida. Molds from this car were used to build the production model convertibles.
