The Ramblin' Ambassadors' debut album, "Avanti"
is a rare novelty item for Avanti fans. This all instrumental
music CD was released a few years ago by Vancouver's Mint
Records. In the 1990s, instrumental spaghetti western
surf band Huevos Rancheros ruled Calgary's garage rock
scene. Led by guitar whiz Brent J. Cooper, the band was
the pride of Cowtown, but the band's run came to an end
in 2001 when Huevos officially called it quits. Now Cooper
is back with his new band and a new album. Picking up
where Huevos Rancheros left off, Cooper takes cues from
past work yet he steers the Ramblin' Ambassadors in a
different direction from the now-defunct Huevos Rancheros,
one that is reminiscent of the Ventures, Calexico, and
Ennio Morriconeall without uttering a syllable.
On Avanti, Brent, along with Tyler Pickering on
drums and Scott Nickless on standup bass, pays tribute
to fellow Mint artists. The retro-meets-garage rock sound
on Avanti is fun, skillful, and full of instrumental
hooks that become instantly familiar. The disc's instrumental
approach works, putting the music in the foreground and
bringing attention to each witty guitar riff or mariachi
trumpet sound. $20.00 per CD includes shipping. Restricted
